Official Franklin County Inmate Search
The Franklin County Sheriff's Office runs the official jail roster. Sheriff Dallas Baldwin leads the office. The Sheriff added a new online inmate information search, and it covers people in custody now. The tool returns current inmates, current charges, current case numbers, the current location for visitation, and court dates. It is free and open to the public.
One warning matters most. The Sheriff says bond information should still come from the Clerk of Courts, not the jail system. So treat the roster as a custody snapshot. For the dollar amount of a bond, the posting route, and case status, check the court file instead.
The Sheriff's inmate information page is the front door for the roster, visitation news, and mail rules.
The Franklin County Sheriff inmate information page links the booking search and posts the current jail rules.

From that page you reach the booking lookup, where the actual name search lives.
Franklin County Inmate Search Fields
The booking lookup is a simple form. You do not need to fill every box. A last name alone can start a search, and the cursor lands on that field when the page loads. Adding a first name or a filter trims a long list. The fields below come from the live Sheriff booking form.
| Field Label | Type | Required | Notes / Format |
|---|---|---|---|
| Inmate Selection | Radio | Fixed | "Current" is checked and locked; only current inmates show in the public form. |
| Last Name | Text | Optional | Up to 35 characters; focus field on load. |
| First Name | Text | Optional | Up to 35 characters. |
| Offender Status | Dropdown | Disabled | Codes for FED, FEL, JUV, MIL, MISD, and more; not active in the public form. |
| Race | Dropdown | Optional | Asian/Pacific Islander, Black, Hispanic, American Indian, White, Unknown. |
| Sex | Dropdown | Optional | Female, Male, Transgender, Unknown. |
| Age | Text | Optional | Up to 10 characters. |
| Search | Button | Submit | Runs the lookup and returns matches. |
The "Current" setting is the key limit. The public form does not let you search released or past inmates. To find someone no longer on the roster, see the steps on the released inmates page.
How to Use the Franklin County Jail Roster
The roster works best with a clean name and one filter. Common names return long lists, so race, sex, or age can help. Keep in mind the search only reaches people held now. If a booking was just hours ago, give the system a little time to update before you decide a name is not there.
The Sheriff's public booking lookup is the screen where each search runs.
The Franklin County Sheriff booking lookup is the free public form for current jail inmates.

Use the steps below to run a search and open a profile.
- Open the Sheriff booking lookup from the inmate information page.
- Type a last name; add a first name if the list looks long.
- Set Race, Sex, or Age to narrow a common name.
- Press Search and scan the returned matches.
- Open the matching record to read charges, case numbers, and court dates.
- Note the visitation location, then check bond with the Clerk.
What Franklin County Inmate Records Show
A roster result is a custody snapshot. It tells you the person is in jail, what they face, and when they next appear. The Sheriff lists current charges, current case numbers, the location set for visitation, and court dates. Bond is the one field you should not trust here. The table below maps the fields you are likely to see in a result.
| Field | What It Shows |
|---|---|
| Name | The inmate's name as booked into the jail system. |
| Current Charges | The charges the person is held on right now. |
| Current Case Numbers | The court case tied to the charges. |
| Court Dates | Upcoming hearing or arraignment dates. |
| Visitation Location | The facility where a visit is scheduled. |
| Age / Race / Sex | Search filters that also help confirm a match. |
| Bond | Not authoritative here; confirm with the Clerk of Courts. |
Some fields stay thin until the case moves. A booking number, a mugshot, or a release date may not show in the public current-inmate view, so do not assume those are always present.
Note: The jail roster covers current custody only, so a missing name can mean the person was released, moved, or never booked here.
Why Bond Goes Through the Clerk
The Sheriff is clear on this point. Bond information should be obtained through the Clerk of Courts office. The roster may flag custody, but the dollar figure, the type of bond, and whether it was posted live in the court file. Getting bond wrong can cost a family money or time, so check the source that owns it.
Which clerk depends on the court. Felony and large civil cases sit with Common Pleas, searchable through Case Information Online. Misdemeanor and traffic cases sit with the Municipal Court. The county Clerk of Courts handles Common Pleas bond questions and can be reached at 614-525-3600.
For an in-custody first appearance, timing matters. The Municipal Court holds in-custody arraignments on Saturdays starting at 9:00 a.m., so a weekend booking often gets a quick first hearing.
Franklin County Jail Facilities
The county runs more than one corrections site. The roster ties each inmate to a visitation location, so the facility name on a result tells you where to go or where to schedule. The main facility named in Sheriff notices is the Jackson Pike corrections center. A Fisher Road location is also referenced in mail notices.
The Sheriff's Office and one jail facility are listed below. The Fisher Road facility appears in mail notices, but the official pages reviewed did not publish its full street address, so confirm that location with the Sheriff before a visit.

When a result lists Jackson Pike, that is the site the Sheriff names for virtual visitation. The Fisher Road address was not published in the official pages reviewed, so the county does not list it openly; call the Sheriff to confirm.
Booking and First Appearance Basics
Booking is the intake step after an arrest. People brought into county custody are searched, photographed, and fingerprinted. Staff run a medical screening, classify the person, and assign housing. Court dates then post to the inmate system as the case is set.
First appearance follows soon after. For people held over a weekend, the Municipal Court runs in-custody arraignments on Saturday mornings. The roster shows the court date once it is set, but case status and any bond decision should be confirmed in the court file. To check the underlying charges and history, use arrest records and the full case file.
Franklin County Jail Visitation
Visits at the Jackson Pike center are virtual. The Corrections Division partnered with GTL/ViaPath Technologies for video visits. Families get two free visits each week, and more can be bought at low cost. You must register and download both required apps to schedule a session.
The GTL visitation portal is where families set up an account and book a slot.
The GTL/ViaPath visitation portal is used to register and schedule Franklin County jail video visits.

The schedule and visit rules are summarized below.
| Item | Rule / Schedule |

Note: Virtual visits apply to people held at the Jackson Pike center, and you must register on the portal before any session can be scheduled.
Mail, Money, and Property Rules
Inmate mail went digital. As of May 28, 2024, personal mail is scanned and delivered to the inmate's tablet as an attachment through the facility message app. Family and friends must use the new mailing address, not the jail's street address. Mail sent the old way will not reach the inmate.
Use this exact mailing format for personal mail:
- Facility Name, State
- Inmate Name, Inmate Identifier
- P.O. Box 247
- Phoenix, MD 21131
Books and magazines follow stricter rules. Printed items must be new and soft-bound, ordered straight from a verifiable retailer like Amazon or Barnes & Noble, sent by USPS, prepaid, and labeled with the inmate's full name. Items are rejected if sent by a private party, shipped by private carrier, or if they are anything other than books or magazines. Content cannot be pornographic, promote violence or discrimination, or carry gang material.
Money and property rules are tight too. The Sheriff no longer accepts underwear, socks, or t-shirts. Contact solution and reading glasses are bought through commissary, not handed in. Pictures come by U.S. Postal Service only. Money orders, by U.S. Postal or Western Union and made out to the inmate, are received but placed in personal property. An inmate may make only one money release every seven days.
Contacting the Franklin County Sheriff
Some questions are easier to settle with a call than a click. The Franklin County Sheriff's Office runs county custody and the online inmate search. When the roster is unclear, or when you need help with visitation or property, the office can point you to the right desk. Dallas Baldwin serves as the elected Sheriff.

Keep in mind the office cannot share confidential records over the phone. For bond and case status, the call you want is to the Clerk of Courts, not the jail. Use the office for custody, visitation, and facility questions. The Sheriff site also offers language options, including Spanish and Somali, which reflects the needs of the Columbus area it serves. If your question is about an active warrant rather than a current inmate, the office runs a separate Wanted Persons page covered on the warrant records page.
Federal Inmates Held Outside the County
Not every detainee sits in county jail. People in federal custody do not show on the Sheriff roster. For them, the Federal Bureau of Prisons runs its own nationwide locator. State prison inmates are tracked separately, and you can read more about that path on the released inmates page.
The federal locator covers people in BOP custody across the country.
The Federal Bureau of Prisons inmate locator finds people held in federal custody, who will not appear on the county jail roster.

If a search comes up empty in both the county roster and the federal locator, the person may be in state prison or already released. For broad jail trends and capacity context, see the jail population page. To check for an active warrant tied to a missing name, use the warrant records page.
